Leisure Arts

The dark period of the Middle Ages was a period where culture and the economy had very little achievement under the structure of the Church and political feudal society. From here began the period of the Renaissance, which was marked by cultural, social and economic rebirth ad revival. The population was also fatally affected by the bubonic plague, which caused a massive decrease in European population. After recovering from the deadly effects of the plague, a dominant middle class began to emerge as various tradesmen, bankers, accountants and guilders began to progress with their businesses. Because of their newly acquired wealth and comfort, this new middle class also began to indulge themselves in leisure, art, education and cultural activities. This growth in cultural life and development of art forged a rebirth or a “renaissance” of Greek and Roman Antiquity.

Having since spread throughout different parts of Europe, Renaissance ideals were said to be most saturated in Italy, particularly in the city of Florence, where artists, architects, inventors, scientists, philosophers and great writers congregated. One of these famous architects was Filippo Brunelleschi. This brilliant Italian sculptor and architect was written to be one of the major proponents of the Early Renaissance Period.  His most famous work is the architectural design and structure known in Florence as Il Duomo or the dome of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. Built using the architect’s own engineering principles and machines, this Florentine dome and lantern began construction in 1296 and was completed until the architect’s death in 1446. It was written that the architect’s proposed solution for building the dome won against the rest. His solution for constructing the eight sided, vaulted dome without buttresses did away with the use of the traditional wood and metal skeletal framework. Instead, he was said to have proposed the herringbone arrangement of bricks in between a stone framework to hold the dome’s shape. Today, Brunelleschi’s dome stands as a proud, soaring symbol and spirit of the Renaissance and of Florence.

An iconic building such as this has been captured and printed many times in different postcard posters, on different orientations and postcard dimensions. Aside from being able to purchase the prints in museums; a more convenient, popular alternative can be the use of online printing services that print standard or customized post card size and designs.
